What you'll learn

  • How to track device health and security in one place using Rippling Device Management

  • How Rippling provides real-time visibility into device status, operating systems, and security posture

  • How to use reports and workflows to automate device monitoring

  • How to detect issues early and reduce manual audits

What you'll need

  • Rippling IT with Device Management

  • Devices enrolled in Rippling MDM and connected through the Rippling Agent

  • Access to Workflow Studio for automated  alerts and monitoring

The problem

For many IT teams, device monitoring is a fragmented and manual process. As companies scale or shift to hybrid and remote work, it becomes harder to keep track of which devices are compliant, online, encrypted, updated, or experiencing issues.

Devices may fall out of MDM enrollment, fail to check in, run unsupported operating systems, or have pending actions that prevent policies or updates from applying. Without a single dashboard that surfaces these issues, IT is forced to rely on spreadsheets, scattered reports, or one-off employee check-ins. This creates blind spots that can lead to security gaps, compliance issues, and unnecessary downtime.

The hypothesis

If device monitoring is centralized inside Rippling IT, teams can view the health of every managed device from a single dashboard. By connecting real-time device health information to reports and workflow automation, IT teams can identify issues early, notify employees or managers immediately, and eliminate manual checks across their fleet.

The solution

1. Manage all devices in Rippling

Rippling Device Management brings every managed Mac and Windows computer into one dashboard. When a device is both MDM-enrolled and running the Rippling Agent, Rippling receives continuous updates about the device and surfaces key information, such as:

  • Whether the device is assigned, unassigned, or archived

  • Agent status to confirm connectivity

  • MDM enrollment status

  • Encryption and security posture

  • Operating system version

  • Installed software and configuration profiles

  • Any pending actions that require user input

This gives IT complete visibility without switching between tools or relying on manual data collection.

2. Review device health metrics from the Devices Overview

The Devices tab provides a high-level snapshot of device fleet health. Metrics are updated every 24 hours and include:

  • MDM status for assigned devices

  • Agent status for assigned devices

  • Encryption status

  • Software installation status

  • Device counts across assigned, unassigned, and archived inventory

  • Warehoused devices if you use Inventory Management

Each metric is interactive. IT teams can click into any tile to see the underlying list of devices and drill into individual device details.

3. Use device details to troubleshoot issues quickly

From the device details page, IT can view everything needed to diagnose or resolve an issue:

  • Technical specifications such as RAM or storage

  • Encryption and antivirus status

  • Installed software

  • Pending actions indicating incomplete commands

  • Activity logs for software installations, OS updates, account changes, and more

  • The ability to lock, wipe, restart, or reset passwords

Because Rippling surfaces the last known connection, MDM status, and pending commands, IT can immediately understand why a device may be out of compliance.

4. Monitor fleet health with reports

Rippling lets IT teams build custom dashboards using device attributes from the Employee Graph, such as:

  • Last connected date

  • MDM status

  • Agent status

  • Operating system version

  • Encryption status

  • Battery health (macOS)

  • Device condition if using Inventory Management

Reports can be filtered by department, location, assignment status, or any custom field. They can also be delivered on a schedule so managers or IT administrators receive ongoing updates.

5. Automate device monitoring with Workflow Studio

Workflow Studio allows IT to take proactive action when device conditions change. Workflows can:

  • Notify IT when a device has not connected for a set number of days

  • Alert employees when their device requires enrollment or action to complete pending tasks

  • Trigger tasks when devices fall behind on OS updates

  • Send scheduled summaries showing devices with compliance issues

Workflows use real-time device and employee data, which means IT does not need to manually review dashboards or contact employees one by one.

The impact

✓ Full visibility into every managed device from one centralized dashboard

✓ No more manual device audits or spreadsheet tracking

✓ Stronger device security and improved compliance across the fleet

✓ IT teams save significant time and can focus on higher-impact work

Rippling IT gives teams a modern, automated system for monitoring and managing device health. With real-time dashboards, detailed device records, and automated workflows, even lean IT teams can maintain a secure, compliant, and fully managed fleet.
